UWC Dilijan

UWC movement

UWC Dilijan is the first UWC school in the post-Soviet space. Central to the ethos of UWC Dilijan is the belief that education can bring together young people from all backgrounds on the basis of their shared humanity, to engage with the possibility of social change through courageous action, personal example and selfless leadership.

UWC Dilijan was founded by impact investors and social entrepreneurs Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend who had a vision of creating a unique international college in the region. The college first opened its doors in August 2014 as one of the 17 United World Colleges and now has 218 students from 77 countries and 285 alumni studying at universities worldwide.

We are a caring, learning community that aims to support the holistic development of our members following the UWC educational principles, model and values.

Experiential learning model

UWC Dilijan offers an experiential learning model with three main pillars - high academic standards of IB Diploma Programme, extensive co-curricular activities with the focus on community service, and residential life.

Diverse student body

Deliberate diversity is at the core of the UWC educational model. Students in UWC Dilijan come from varied socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. They undergo a unique selection process in their home country - based on merit and character. They are distinguished by their academic excellence and creativity; they strive to make a change in the community and in the world.

Excellent facilities

The campus is equipped with excellent facilities, including sports facilities (indoor swimming-pool, gym, football field, tennis and basketball courts) as well as theatre and music room. Armenia offers many opportunities for outdoor activities.

Change-making school

UWC Dilijan is a part of projects and partnerships aimed at turning Dilijan into a hub of culture and education in Armenia. The UWC Dilijan community is one of the drivers of this process through its co-curricular programmes and events that engage the Dilijan community in knowledge sharing programmes.

UWC Dilijan is also a part of a wider network of organizations that work to transform Armenia, such as the IDeA Foundation, the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, the Foundation for Armenian Science and Technology and others.

UWC is a global movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

Armenia is an ancient country in the South Caucasus region, with rich history, culture and a warm spirit that makes you feel at home wherever you may be coming from. It is a unique country for living and working – anything but mainstream. Here you can create something new, here you can make a difference.

The Republic of Armenia, a democratic state, has three million inhabitants, and there are around seven million Armenians abroad, the Armenian Diaspora. It is officially the first Christian nation, with majestic medieval art and architecture, and several UNESCO heritage sites.

It is one of the safest countries in the world, where family values prevail.

Armenia offers many opportunities to take advantage of its breathtaking mountainous nature, favourable climate, delicious cuisine and organic food.

“Armenia is a fantastic country! I have uncovered a very deep connection between Armenian and Spain, where I’m from. The way family and friendships are cherished, the way food is approached, all made me feel at home in spite my very limited Armenian... and the absence of my beloved Mediterranean!"

Head of UWC Dilijan, Gabriel Abad Fernandez

Dilijan is a green and mountainous city in Armenia, located on the historical Silk Route. It is rapidly growing into a center of knowledge, culture and recreation:

UWC Dilijan is actively involved in community building and development in the town and its surroundings.

"I got to see how Dilijan, the town where the school is located, has changed and benefitted since the arrival of the international community. I got to hear stories of success and failure, all of which made Armenia feel more like home".
